ANO (Ano)

Taiwanese graffiti artist

Video games, science, and graffiti… These three elements are indispensable nourishment and an integral part of his life. He was first introduced to graffiti in junior high school through skateboarding, and from then on, his life became inseparable from graffiti art. As a child, he often played at the large arcade operated by his maternal grandfather, becoming very familiar with the elements and interfaces of video games. This led him to incorporate pixel art—full of a strong gaming aesthetic—into his personal image creations, which has since become the most distinctive symbol of his graffiti work!

Q & A

Q: How do you start your day?
After brushing my teeth and washing my face, I start learning new software after breakfast. Because of my creative work, I try out a lot of new software. Basically, mornings are my study time. In the afternoons, I usually draw, create, or do woodworking, etc. In the evenings, I reply to work-related emails.

Q: Where do you usually spend most of your time?
My studio (in Banqiao) and delicious restaurants.

Q: Which restaurant do you visit most often?

“Hao Chu Breakfast” is great all around, and they even have Japanese magazines to read! I most often order the pork rib sandwich. The meat inside is nice and thick, so guys should really love it. What’s special is that this place also serves fried tangyuan—it's not easy to have fried tangyuan for breakfast, either (haha).

“Sanma Stinky Hot Pot” in Shulin is highly recommended. This is the flagship store (as they say, haha). The ingredients for the individual hot pots are freshly selected and prepared to order. You absolutely have to try the spicy duck blood!

Q: What do you do for entertainment after work?
Ever since I started my own business and began taking on freelance projects, there has been no such thing as “off work” for me, because work has blended so perfectly into my daily life that I can no longer tell the difference (wry smile). If you ask what helps me relax, it’s playing video games, going to the gym, and skateboarding… Recently, I’ve been hooked on Mario Party.

Q: Why do you use pixel art as an element in your image creations?
My grandfather used to run an arcade game shop. In the early days, game screen resolutions were extremely low, and I found it fascinating that Mario’s face could be represented by just a few pixels. Later, I took on mobile game art projects at work, back when Nokia phones were still prevalent and games were all in black and white. As game resolutions continued to improve, the digital age arrived, and the pixel style gradually disappeared. I started thinking that pixels were a classic part of our era, and I wanted to preserve them!

Q: What is the creative concept behind this exhibition?
I treat this place as a game space, inspired by the concept of a children’s playroom. The exhibition is titled “Game Room.” “Room” refers to a room, and since hotels have many rooms, it extends this concept as well. Many of my creations are inspired by everyday life. I enjoy observing the things around me. The work “Good Fortune Shines Bright” depicts the Chihuahua kept by the owner of the NT$10 store at the entrance to the alley where I live. It later passed away due to old age, so I wanted to paint a picture to commemorate it. I eventually showed the painting to the owner, and he was both deeply moved and surprised!

Q: What is the spirit of graffiti?
Creating without being restricted by time, space, themes, or other people's instructions—that's what the spirit of graffiti means to me!

Q: What is the most recent book you read? Did you have any insights or thoughts after finishing it?
《Human User Manual》is a fascinating book that explores behavior, interpersonal relationships, and social connections, analyzing human behavior through observation. After reading it, it seems that as long as we make good use of empathy, understanding, and compromise in our interactions with others and in any relationship, we can overcome almost anything (laughs).

Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
Night markets, especially those in central and southern Taiwan, have a distinctive charm, with a wide variety of snacks and a high level of creativity. Chiayi’s Wenhua Road Night Market covers a large area. The stir-fried conch meat beside the Wenhua Road Post Office is fragrant and crispy, making it perfect as a snack to accompany drinks! If you don’t feel like eating snacks, there are also restaurants to choose from. Taichung’s Houfeng Bikeway offers ever-changing scenery from its starting point to Houli Horse Ranch. Along the way, you will also pass over a railway bridge and through a tunnel, allowing you to experience different kinds of cycling sensations.Houfeng Bikeway https://travel.taichung.gov.tw/zh-tw/Experience/CyclingTrip/4/%E5%90%8E%E8%B1%90%E9%90%B5%E9%A6%AC%E9%81%93

Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
I’m most excited to see something I never imagined (laughs). I have a small wish: Having stayed at so many hotels and inns, I’ve found that laundry facilities are usually located in common areas or that laundry services are provided. It can be inconvenient when washing undergarments, so I suggest providing laundry detergent in the rooms. It would be even better if there were a place to hang clothes to dry!
