Contemporary artist Huang Po-Hsun

Using “abundance” and “freedom” as the two central themes of his artistic practice, he explores the interrelationship between himself and his living environment, portraying this world that is both abundant and lonely in vivid, colorful forms. His works often evoke a bright sense of drifting, a quiet and solitary presence, and an ineffable uncertainty, along with sumptuous hues and the spirit of Eastern humanism.

His works continue to receive support from collectors throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States, with invitations to exhibitions and ongoing creative endeavors every year. In recent years, Huang Po-Hsun’s works have not only received support from national-level collection programs but have also appeared at international art fairs in various locations, making him a contemporary artist renowned for both artistic sensibility and creative strength.

Q & A

Q: How do you start your day?
First, of course, I sleep until I wake up naturally (with a sweet smile!). After getting up, I first drink a large glass of warm water, followed by coffee. Then I reply to emails and work messages. Next, I organize the palette from the previous evening and start painting.

Q: Where do you usually spend most of your time?
Four or five days a week, I go for a run around a nearby riverside park in the evening. Watching the afterglow of the sunset always helps me feel calm.

Q: Which restaurant do you go to most often?
After my evening run, I head to the Yumin Street Night Market in Banqiao for dinner inspiration! It’s on my way home, with plenty of choices and delicious food. I don’t have any regular favorites; I usually try to find something I haven’t eaten before. There’s a stall that sells carrot juice or star fruit juice, and I think it’s pretty good!

Q: What do you do for entertainment after work?
As a full-time artist, my life and work are intertwined, making it difficult to define what “getting off work” means. Before the pandemic, after completing a stage of a series of works, I would go to a nearby second-run cinema to watch movies all day. Now, I watch a little content on streaming platforms before bed each day.

Q: AI technology is advancing rapidly, and many works can be created in a short amount of time. Do you think AI will replace artists?
It is difficult to say what the future holds, but for now, it seems that it probably will not. However, perhaps the history of human art will change as a result of AI’s involvement, just as the emergence of photography two hundred years ago changed the history of art.

Q: What advice would you give to artists who are just starting out and have unstable incomes when they cannot balance their ideals and making a living?
If you need to work part-time, then go work part-time—survival is important!! Finding a part-time job to earn a living while sustaining your creative work is a necessary path for most artists who are still struggling to make ends meet.

Q: What is the most recent book you read? Did you have any insights or thoughts after finishing it?
I was reading Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind a while ago, considering how human evolution and development from ancient times to the present have transformed our way of life. Recently, I have been rereading novels by Haruki Murakami. His stable, delicate, and lingering yet somewhat fantastical writing style is somewhat similar to the kind of work I have been hoping to create recently.

Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
Night markets! When night falls, you can find all kinds of new and fun things there~

Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
Staying in a new place and taking a walk around the neighborhood always feels like starting a new life or embarking on a new experience. No matter how many times I do it, it always lifts my spirits~

Q: What is your impression of the hotels under the Taipei Hotel Group?
It is truly excellent—especially the team responsible for handling the artworks. They search everywhere for outstanding pieces to adorn the hotel, and throughout the communication process, they show great respect for the artists’ ideas. This is indeed very rare! Of course, I am also very grateful that through this collaboration, we have become wonderful friends!
