Yosifu
PRESENTER

Yosef
Traveling Wild Artist
Yosifu, an Amis artist born in the Matailin Tribe of Yuli, Hualien, is currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is one of the very few artists active on the international art scene in Europe whose creative work focuses on Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples, and has been invited several times as an elite speaker by TEDxTaipei.
In recent years, he has enthusiastically participated in and focused on environmental issues, frequently and boldly collaborating across disciplines with the fashion industry. In addition to continually innovating his creations, he continues to showcase new contemporary Indigenous art in the art world.
The works break free from the framework of traditional Indigenous art. Although they convey memories of growing up in the ancestral homeland and its ceremonial culture, their bold use of color and distinctive themes create a powerful visual impact. With uninhibited, provocative brushstrokes, tradition transforms into vibrant and dynamic fashion colors!

Q & A
Q: How do you start your day?
A: Starting the day with happiness makes the whole atmosphere feel different. Tell yourself in the mirror, “You’re really great! You’re really handsome!” Then learn to forget the unhappy things.
Q: Where do you usually spend most of your time?
A: The rice paddy paths and seaside in the Hualien tribe.
Q: Which restaurant do you visit most often?
A: Stir-Fry 100. It offers one of the most quintessentially Taiwanese dining experiences, with plenty of delicious choices. The atmosphere is relaxed yet lively, and every time I return from the UK, I head straight there to eat.
Q: What do you enjoy doing for entertainment after work?
A: Watching movies and going to the gym. Movies are a combination of all the arts, and the most direct way to enrich an artist’s inner cultivation. Working out is, of course, an investment in myself—I’m an idol, hahaha!
Q: What is the most recent book you read? Did you gain any insights or have any thoughts after finishing it?
A: In the autobiography of American female painter Georgia O’Keeffe, she went to a very primitive and desolate area of New Mexico in search of creative inspiration. I find this spirit of brave adventure very courageous! Life is about daring to take risks and not settling for the comfort of ease.
Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
A: Yuli Market in Hualien. It reflects the authentic daily lives of ordinary people. The lively and familiar calls of vendors rise and fall, and you can even sample the food! How wonderful!
Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
A: Design and uniqueness.
Q: What is your impression of the hotels under the Taipei Hotel group?
A: The service quality is excellent, and the hotel’s minimalist, stylish design perfectly suits the style of a modern urban area.
